We would like to introduce the newest members of our team; Cheryl and Brieanne.

I’m a 5th generation Arizonan. I am married with three grown daughters, a grandson and two dogs. I enjoy camping, kayaking, jet skiing, or getting away to a hidden cabin. Love spending time with family and friends having some awesome BBQ’s. I’m a little obsessed with RockBand. Yes…I said RockBand the video game. Everyone fights over playing the guitar but I sat down to the drums and became the RockBand Queen! I’ve drum so much I’ve already gone through 2 pair of drums sets already. It’s very therapeutic.

I am, what I consider, a recent transplant to Arizona. I moved just over three years ago from a suburb just outside of Chicago, IL where I grew up. After moving here, I decided to make a career change. I left JPM Chase after 9 great years for the exciting new world of dentistry where I worked for a General Dentist as a Dental Assistant for about a year. Now, here I am, with this great opportunity in Orthodontics, working with a team of wonderful people. I am new to the field, learning more and more every day and loving every second of it. I am a newly wed since May of this year, and as of right now, our only children are our dogs, Pancakes and Mike (whom we love and adore like humans, it’s kind of sick). When I’m not working, I love to spend time with my family and friends, going shopping for anything I can put in my house, cooking, taking short trips to wherever I can get to and I LOVE T.V. (I know… not so healthy, but the truth)

Spinach, Artichoke & Tuna Salad

1 10oz box Frozen chopped spinach
1 lb Dreamfield’s thin spaghetti
2 tbsp olive oil
2 tbsp butter
1 large shallot, finely chopped
4 cloves garlic
1 can (14 oz) quartered artichokes in water, drained
Nutmeg
1 can (5oz) water-packed tuna, drained and flaked
1 lemon, juiced
2 tbsp chopped fresh thyme

Defrost the spinach and wring it dry. Bring a large pot of water to a boil, salt it, and add the spaghetti and cook according to pkg directions. Drain and let cool. In a larger skillet, heat the olive oil and butter over medium heat. Add the shallot and garlic and cook, stirring for 2 minutes. Add the artichokes and spinach; season with a little salt and pepper and a hint of nutmeg. Add the tuna and pasta to a bowl. Top with spinach and artichokes. Dress with the lemon juice and thyme. Serve or refrigerate for later.

BLT Mac ‘n’ Cheese

4 slices turkey bacon cut into 1-inch pieces
12oz’s Dreamfield’s Penne pasta
2 ¼ cups low fat milk
6 oz  low fat cream cheese
2 cups shredded low fat cheddar cheese
6 oz’s cherry tomatoes halved
¼ cup low fat yogurt
1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
1 small head romaine lettuce, thinly sliced

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In a large skillet, cook the bacon over medium heat until crisp, about 10 minutes, drain. In a large pot of boiling, salted water, cook the pasta until almost al dente, drain. In the same pot, bring the milk to a simmer over medium heat, whisking and stir in the cream cheese. Stir in the cheddar cheese until melted. Add the pasta, bacon and tomatoes; season with salt and pepper. Transfer to a 9 x 13 casserole dish that has been sprayed with Pam (you can thank me later for that tip). Bake until heated through, about 25 minutes. In a large bowl, combine the yogurt and vinegar; season with salt and pepper. Add the lettuce and toss to coat. Serve the salad with the pasta.

*Dreamfields pasta products allow diabetics to enjoy a traditionally high carb menu without the 42 grams of carbs found in the other brands of pasta. There is only 5 grams of digestible carbs in Dreamfield’s products. Myself, being a diabetic, had found their product so good that it is the only pasta product I make and serve. Enjoy!!!

National Orthodontic Health Month

During the Halloween season, the most pressing question we hear from our patients is, “What can I have that’s fun to eat on Halloween?” To avoid harming your braces, stay clear of the following treats, or recipes with these ingredients, as they could lengthen treatment time:

• All hard candies
• All chewy candies
• Caramel
• Nuts
• Licorice
• Taffy
• Jelly Beans
• Hard Pretzels
• Bubblegum
• Popcorn
• Taco chips
• Ice

For alternatives, look for foods that are softer, such as soft chocolate or peanut butter cups. Candies that are sticky, chewy, hard or crunchy are generally out. Of course, as usual, it’s vital to keep your teeth, gums, and braces clean in order to maintain good oral hygiene. Remember to brush and floss after any Halloween treats!!!

October is National Breast Cancer awareness month. We have all been touched by breast cancer somehow, either by a friend or family member. The Cancer Project is a great resource for those with cancer. The Cancer Project has made it their mission to educate people affected by cancer with nutritional information that can help reduce the risk of a recurrence. The research   provided show that diets that are rich in fruits, vegetables, along with other healthy lifestyle choices are what reduce the risk of the recurrence. The Cancer Project has classes in our greater Phoenix areas that offer cooking classes, research and press releases, and even recipes! Here is the link to the Cancer Project if you are interested in learning more www.cancerproject.org.

Here is some helpful information for anyone you know who’s going through Chemotherapy and/or Radiation Treatment. Our Orthodontic Practice Rep, Roz, is also a Medical Rep for a Specialty Oncology Pharmaceuticals company.  Roz can provide patients an oral rinse product (MuGard),  by making it available through their medical provider.  MuGard can help prevent, protect and treat patients with Oral Mucositis (mouth sores), a common symptom for those going through treatment.

Below is a link with more information on MuGard.  Please feel free to share this link with anyone who you believe would benefit from the information.  Also, don’t hesitate to reach out to Roz by phone (602-762-6262) or by email (roz@directmedx.com) with any questions, etc.
