Still University in Mesa Arizona as well as a supervising dentist in the hygiene program at Mesa Community College. She travels to a clinic in Michigan where she is a practicing dentist. Thank you Allison for your kind words and thank you for being an awesome patient!!!

Smurfs Movie Review

It only took 1 hour and 40 minutes to realize that the best age group to properly assess and review this movie is those children in the 3 to 8 years old range with the younger scale of the age spectrum the most appropriate. As a grandparent not having been indoctrinated in the Smurf culture (never even watched the cartoon show), the 1 hour 40 minutes length film felt like 1 year 40 weeks. I took mygrandsons, aged 4 and 5 and their reactions were what I would typically expect: a few chuckles, a little restlessness but their focus improved once the story line has been established and the endless slapstick scenes commenced. This movie depends largely on these scenes to elicit the guffaws of laughter it is attempting to achieve. Make no mistake about it, this is not an Oscar contender, but the corny script will hold up with the young members of the audience. The crux of the story, in a nutshell, is as follows: The Smurfs are preparing for a celebration known as “The Festival of the Blue Moon”. Knowing Smurf Clumsy’s penchant for disaster, the Smurfs send the hapless Clumsy off to look for Smurfberries. He is spotted and trailed by the villainous wizard, Gargamel and Gargamel’s aspiring thespian cat, Azrael, to uncover the whereabouts of the Smurf village. Gargamel breaks through the invisible shield of protection that guards Smurfville and all heck breaks loose. Gargamel tries to catch the Smurfs flee for their lives, Clumsy leads Papa, Smurfette, Brainy, Grouchy and Gutsy into a portal that was opened up by a magic potion that Papa Smurf had conjoured up for the festival. The portal leads the Smurfs and Gargamel in hot pursuit, to New York City where they land in an apartment with a very kindly couple named Patrick and Grace Winslow. The reaction that Patrick displays certainly lived up to how I would react were I suddenly infested with little blue people all over the place. I found Grace’s reaction much more relaxed considering that she found Clumsy in the toilet. Once Patrick and Grace settle down, the Smurfs wreak havoc when following Patrick to work and turning his office into shambles. Patrick works for a huge cosmetics conglomerate named Angelou and is working for a hard to please boss. When finalizing a project aimed at billboard advertising, Clumsy falls on the keyboard of Patrick’s laptop and thus an erroneous message is sent to his boss. Patrick has been researching with the “Blue Moon Festival” was about and this is what was transmitted to Patrick’s boss. Azrael, whom I consider the best actor in this movie, and Gargamel pursue the Smurfs through Patrick’s office and in to a toy store where Gargamel chases them with a leaf blower that he stole from an unsuspecting maintenance man. Lot’s of slapstick here. There are a few tender moments with Grace, acting as a buffer between Patrick’s growing irritation with the mischevious house guests, but all is forgiven with the “Blue Moon” research is revealed via huge billboards all over NYC. Of course, the resulting billboard as is a huge success, saves Patrick’s job and nets a huge promotion as a result of it. The climax to this movie consists of the rest of the clan showing up, via the portal that opened up again due to it actually being the time of the blue moon and Papa Smurf sacrificing himself so that the other Smurfs could escape back to Smurfville. A battle ensues bringing shrieks of laughter (again from the younger ones) with Clumsy actually coimg out as the hero. With the portal re-opened, the goodbyes expressed by the Smurfs and the Winslows is very heart warming.Gargamel’s insidious plan to extract anything is thwarted and Grace and Patrick can now peacefully retire to their apartment and await the birth of the first child. If you plan on taking little ones to see this movie, beware. There are a few suggestive scenes such as Smurfette standing over a floor vent ala Marilyn Monroe with the Smurf fellas all a google as her skirt gets blown above her knees and the scene where Patrick’s boss, Odile, tries to seduce Gargamel for the secret to his anti-aging potion. Otherwise, watch at your own risk. I believe there is only one drawback to a parent viewing this movie and that is the 1 hour and 40 minutes wasted when a good nap would be sufficed.

One of our patients, Michael Young, is one of the 30 winners of the People All-Stars Among Us. He was introduced and honored at the 2010 MLB All-Star Game in Anaheim. At age 12, Michael  (right) began a charity golf event that has, over the last five years, raised over $250,000 to fund the Animal Assisted Therapy Program at Phoenix Children’s Hospital. The Swing Fore Kids Golf Classic has become the programs major fundraiser. His tournament has impacted thousands of sick children who need certified therapy dogs to help them recover physically and emotionally.
