When I took my grandson’s to see Tangled in late November, I didn’t realize how much they and myself would enjoy it. It is very reminiscent of some of Disney’s great musical animated films of the 90′s. It doesn’t have the singing teapots of Beauty and the Beast nor the ever popular songs of Aladdin or The Little Mermaid but the songs in this movie can hold their own. My particular favorite is the Mother Gothel song “Mama Knows Best”. The boy’s loved the villains in the pub number so the music appeals to a wide audience.
This movie is a loose variation of the Brothers Grimm fairy tale. Rapunzel is a princess who was abducted as a baby by a witch named Mother Gothel. Rapunzel’s hair has the magical quality of retaining the youth of anyone who comes in contact with it. Never mind that the hair is 70 feet long, Rapunzel can control all of it, including using it as a ladder, a swing or even as a weapon. She is locked up in a tall tower because Mother Gothel does not want Rapunzel to realize her true identity and she definitely does not want anyone else to know of the hair’s magical powers. The movie moves easily from the thief, Flynn Rider discovering the tower and Rapunzel while fleeing from the King’s sheriff, to Rapunzel’s 18th birthday and her desire to see the actual launch site of lighted lanterns that appear in the night sky every night on her birthday. Her steady companion, a chameleon named Pascal and the antics of the sheriff’s horse, Maximus, who is very amusing acting in a blood-hound like fashion in trying to track the thieves scent are scene stealers. Maximus plays a big part in this movie and was mygrandson’s favorite character. The evolution of a deep friendship that developes between Flynn and Max is just one of the many feel-good moments this movie provides. I know that at this point
in the year the movie is very unlikely to still be shown in theatres but please take the opportunity to rent it when it comes out on DVD.You and your children will not be disappointed. The boy’s actually went to see it twice. I envy you your initial viewing of this film and I hope you enjoy it as much as we did.
